Captain Guy D. Gruters
During the Vietnam War, Captain Gruters flew over 400 missions and was shot down twice. The second time, he was held captive for five years and three months in communist POW camps, including the infamous Hanoi Hilton. He and his fellow prisoners of war experienced unspeakable torture and hardship, deprived of even the most basic of human needs. Reflecting on those experiences as a prisoner of war, Captain Gruters says,

“We were fighting under hopeless conditions, fighting when they had all the physical force, and we had nothing. But our commanding officers were very God-fearing men, and their first orders were that we have a church service every Sunday at noon.

Every Sunday, we prayed an Our Father and recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Twenty-third Psalm. Of course, we prayed all the time because God was our help in every way; but at 12 noon on Sunday we knew that every other POW, even those in the torture cells, were praying that church service…and this was a source of tremendous strength.”

Faith, prayer, spiritual nourishment – they provide strength and courage for the people in our military who are protecting our country, our way of life.

Praise for Our Troops and Chaplains
There are hundreds of thousands of men and women in the military – heroes, every one of them. We honor them and recognize their sacrifices for our country. We are deeply grateful to you and your families for your commitment to our country.

We thank you for what you are doing for our Catholic Soldiers, for the Church, our Lord, and our Country. My brother was in Iraq several years back, and he told me how rare it was to see a priest and of the great need to talk to someone and to share in Communion with our Lord.

~ Mary Anna and the Regnum Christi Team in Birmingham, AL

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the men and women of our armed forces for their sacrifice and their service to our country and to the cause of world peace.

In the time that I have been the Archbishop for the Military Services, I have been deeply deeply impressed by the commitment of such fine men and women.

~The Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio

I heard about you on the ride home from work today on EWTN radio. As a former USAF officer, I can tell you that what you are doing is grand. There are down hours when in the military that must be filled. Thank you for filling it with good, the love of Christ, who has kept me alive so that I am now 55. I do volunteer civil defense work….Thanks for presenting the Christian side.
